People's first reaction is usually "wow, " amazed at our use of bright and vibrant colors and the ambience that the place sets off, " said sonia jain, director of indigo arts, the first ever asian indian art gallery in new jersey. indigo arts has started organizing art exhibitions on every first saturday of the month at raagini restaurant, 1085 route 22 east, mountainside, nj 07092. the next exhibit there is on march 3rd, 2007. sonia jain will be showcasing indian culture on oil paintings and handicrafts. the exhibition hopes to hold true to its motto of "bringing back colors in your world. one wall at a time." the inspiration to open an art gallery came from sonia's visit to her home in india last summer. she recalls visiting various galleries in india and wondering why she never had seen these works of arts displayed in the galleries. "i remember thinking why these beautiful works of art never reached us, the common people and only were accessible to the elite class, " said jain. jain wanted to connect a bigger group of people to the artworks that were rarely seen by much of the population. "i think there is a huge gap that needs to be filled, not only in art but also literature and classical music, meant to be enjoyed by the middle class too, " said jain. the gallery categorizes the artworks in five categories such as abstract, monuments, religion, traditional and handicrafts. each category depicts a certain essence of the rich traditions of indian culture from historical epics such as "ramayana" and "mahabharata" reinvented in an abstract form, to lavish palaces and village lifestyles and folk traditions of india. the paintings exhibited in the gallery are chosen by careful selection. jain explained that some of the paintings that she saw in the art galleries she visited in india were too abstract for the common man to comprehend or connect with. hence, the items she chose for the gallery possesses universal themes that many people can relate to. "i wanted the paintings to somehow be the window to the world of indian culture and also be the stepping stone to appreciating the culture, " said jain. according to jain, the uniqueness of indian art can be credited to its iconographic culture. natural resources serve as a huge inspiration in many of the indian artworks and are seen as divine. the indian temples and traditional dances are also other art forms that represent use of symbols. "art is a mirror image of society in that it shows what is going on in society during a particular time period, "said jain. with the introduction of their new gallery, jain hopes to promote indian art in the state as well as the country. "so far exposure to these types of art forms has been very minimum and pretty much untouched in mainstream, " said jain. jain believes that bollywood films have dominated much of the mass consciousness of society. "people seem to ignore other forms of serious art and prefer instant gratitude instead, " said jain. commenting on her own paintings, sonia said, "art has connected me with my roots, my sentiments and my heritage. when i make paintings, i feel meditating on myself as it is subjective expression in addition to objective representation of natural surroundings. vibrant colors in my art refresh and recharge me. i completely agree and get reminded of this famous quote, "art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." as someone has said, "a room hung with pictures is a room hung with thoughts." by our gallery and periodic exibitions, we hope to bring back colors, emotions and thoughts back in our world. in this age of instant gratification, meaningful art can help us connect with our own selves deep within. sonia is a textile designer and an artist. she has been painting since her childhood and most of her artwork encompasses natural surroundings. she exhibits some of her work with the other artists at the exhibitions organized by indigo arts. for more information on indigo arts, please call sonia jain at 908 ; 791-0050 or visit indigoartsonline.
