About reviewing the use of funds after a specific number of years. schukei suggested the resolution designating use of funds be adopted prior to the primary election. schukei explained that in october of 2007 all of the proposals were rejected and, therefore, there aren't any firms to interview. councilperson fauss moved, seconded by councilperson coy to approve and move forward with the proposed resolution placing keno on the may 13, 2008 primary election with a change in the wording to be broader, such as for community betterment, and also to direct the city attorney to draft a resolution designating use of the funds for parks and recreation for four years with a public hearing required to change the use of the funds if elected officials so desire. roll call: ayes: councilpersons brenneman, coy, fauss, lange, and reeder. nays: van dyke. absent: saunders and wilson. motion carried. the last item discussed was the proposed acquisition of property located at 903 south 4th street and owned by tim criss. the house on the property was condemned in 2006 and has never been torn down. as a result, in august 2007, the city filed a charge in madison county against criss for failure to remove a condemned structure. the condemned house on the criss property continues to have a negative impact on the neighborhood and the fire division desires to use budgeted money to remove the structure. the property has a number of judgment liens against it and liens for unpaid real estate taxes. the city made an agreement with criss that provides for criss to pay the real estate taxes, get the liens released and convey the property to the city. if the agreement is implemented, the city will, in effect, pay for demolition of the condemned house and be the owner of the bare lot. a public hearing will be held, in accordance with section 181755 of nebraska revised statutes, prior to acquisition of the property. the hearing is scheduled for february 4, 2008. councilperson van dyke moved, seconded by councilperson fauss to approve and move forward with the proposed acquisition of property located at 903 south 4th street and owned by tim criss. roll call: ayes: councilpersons brenneman, coy, fauss, lange, reeder and van dyke. nays: none. absent: saunders and wilson. motion carried. councilperson coy requested a discussion on "the deadline the mayor has given the shared workforce group". councilperson brenneman explained the finance committee meeting is subject to the open meetings law and the agenda cannot be amended at this time. councilperson coy stated, "in light of the fact this is the first and last opportunity that this group has had to discuss this topic and with tomorrow, january 29, being the deadline, i feel it is appropriate to approach this as an emergency item. all i'm asking is that we extend the deadline until next monday so the item can be discussed at the finance committee meeting at greater depth." councilperson van dyke stated "it is the mayor's decision and not elected officials." councilperson brenneman agrees that this is the mayor's decision but the deadline could be changed at the next finance committee meeting. councilperson coy requested that this item be placed "on the next finance committee meeting and michigan lottery keno.

Taken over the few existing buildings. we engineer officers stayed in a small old house that was very near our office. it did not catch any breeze off the ocean, so it was very hot. the dining room for the headquarters officers was a large screened porch on the second floor of one of the buildings. the food was not very good, but it was edible. we were given an atabrin20 pill at every noon meal as a malaria preventative. some officers would not take theirs, but i knew that capt. ross had recurring bouts of malaria that made him really sick, so i took mine every day. the pills made my skin and fingernails, and the whites of my eyes turn a yellowish color. "pappy" rogers was good at getting an occasional bottle of whisky from the ships that came in and he was very generous with it. every time he got a bottle he insisted that we all have a drink with him. after about a week of idleness i was given the job of putting electric lights in the field hospital that had been set up in tents to receive the wounded from the battle of oro bay that was raging on the other side of new guinea. the mountainous backbone of the island had a pass at between 11, 000 and 12, 000 feet with the kakoda trail running through it. the japanese tried to use that trail for an attack on port moresby, but the terrain was too rugged for them to come over in any force. the c47 cargo planes flying supplies to oro bay, and sometimes wounded back, had to struggle to get enough altitude to fly through the pass. later in the war i flew through the pass a couple of times, and did not like it. anyway, although all kinds of supplies were hard to get, i got the generators, wire and light bulbs i needed., and got an electrician with a helper from the 43rd g.s. regiment to install them. the japanese were sending two or three bombers over nearly every night, so we did not want any bright lights, and besides, we could not afford the generators to enable us to light the hospital brightly, so we used 40 watt bulbs to give a fairly uniform dim light throughout the tents. i believe we eventually put lights in the doctors' and nurses' quarters 20 synthetic quinine. 45.

| Add value to our community. as part of this effort, and in response to association chancellor carl primavera's call for strategic planning, a foundation planning committee was formed. the committee, under the able leadership of gerald mchugh, president-elect of the philadelphia bar foundation, is grappling with core issues that define both the structure and the mission of the foundation. after frank and candid discussion, the members of this committee asked that we convene a special meeting of the foundation's board to consider their bold vision for the foundation. the work of this committee cannot be overestimated and i truly humbled by the contribution of each and every committee member. yogi berra once said, "you can't get to second base without first taking your foot off first." we must be prepared to risk the security of first base in order to gain much more. i will be reporting in future articles about the work of the foundation and this important committee. we also have some other exciting news to report. on friday, may 18, the foundation will present an award to mayor john f. street in recognition of his tireless work to improve the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community. the award will be presented at a gala luncheon at the union league. numerous firms have already committed to sponsor the event at a cost of , 000. if you or your firm would like to be a part of this special event, please contact melissa engler at 215 ; 238-6347. the foundation plays a vital role in this legal community, as one of the primary mechanisms for organizing the financial support of the private bar for our rich and vibrant legal services community. if you do not already do so, i urge you to take this opportunity to support the bar foundation's vision of providing equal access to justice for all. visit our web site at philadelphiabar and click on the bar foundation's icon.
