Through the generous support of the steans family foundation and the united way of metropolitan chicago, jpa launched the building bridges to chicago's underserved communities through school partnerships bbp ; this year. children referred to this program are identified by their teacher and or parent as having severe emotional and or social problems that warrant intervention. this significant community project has far reaching applications for the four elementary schools involved, which are located in some of chicago's most impoverished and underserved neighborhoods. the initiative provides highly-sensitive counseling and supportive services to distressed children at three schools in north lawndale including gregory, lathrop, and pope elementary schools along with the bucktown charter elementary school in bucktown. the bbp provides an important bridge for vulnerable children to access critical mental health services that would otherwise not be available to them. tanya is in kindergarten and her family has been homeless for the past six months. tanya's mom has been struggling with substance abuse and depression her entire life and while she is sober and under a doctor's care currently for depression, her inability to sustain employment has led ms. davis, tanya, and tanya's younger brother trevor to be homeless once again. while tanya's teacher, ms. burnett, is aware of the family's plight, she has become increasingly concerned about tanya because this normally happy child and bright student has become increasingly withdrawn and not able to focus in the classroom. as a result, ms. burnett referred tanya for counseling with one of jpa's on-site clinicians through the bbp. tanya has been attending her counseling sessions regularly every week. using dolls, she has been able to express her feelings about being homeless to the jpa therapist. the therapist has been a steadfast resource of support for tanya and has worked with ms. burnett to insure that tanya's classroom behaviors are understood and appropriately managed. within a short period of time in counseling, ms. burnett reported that tanya is now attentive in class and appears to be returning to the friendly, helpful, and joyful six-year old that she once was. master's level clinicians from jpa provide a wide range of comprehensive services though the bbp including: individual and group counseling, classroom groups and observation, consultation to teachers and other school professionals, support and or counseling for parents, crisis intervention services, and referrals for services that jpa does not provide. these services are designed to help children gain access to important educational opportunities provided by their respective schools toward achieving their emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social potential. jpa plans to make the bbp a training program for students who are completing internships as a requirement of their master of social work degree starting in the fall of 2006.
