Less than a year after the slippery slope hit the skids, i decided to release a cd under the more grammatically correct "also-ran" umbrella. the cd would be a compilation of random material i had collected over two years, much of which was originally released on a cassette anthology that i had put together during the tumultuous summer of 2001 and gave away to thirty or so of closest imprisoned pen-pals. the cd was to be called songs of freedom & joy and it would contain a few pop songs played by friends, some noise pieces i recorded on a karaoke machine years ago and a number of tracks that can only be described as "random illegally-obtained creepy shit." compiling content for the cd was fun for about three minutes until i had to start working with musicians in order to get more material to add to the mountain of crap i had already collected. see, i desperately longed to give the consumer his money's worth and i wanted the final cd to clock in at seventy minutes the final cd ended up clocking in at over eighty minutes and thus needed to be trimmed down a bit, but that's another story [trimming your compilation cd for fun and profit] for another day [tuesday!] ; , so i found myself knocking on doors in an effort to pad the compilation. this effort lasted a number of weeks and resulted in me hating rock and or roll musicians even more than i already did. an old joke: what do you do when you find a drummer on your doorstep? pay him for the pizza and send him on his way. you can take out the word "drummer" and replace it with any other band member and that joke will still ring true. musicians are worthless. they are lazy, stupid, arrogant and shallow. they're even worse than astronauts, if you can believe that! dealing with these wretched fuckers was an absolute nightmare that i yearned to be woken from. one band sent in their submissions on a tape they made on a boombox. this boombox incident occurred years ago and i'm still completely perplexed by that move! why not burn a cd-r instead, which would've been easier, quicker and would've sounded better? why wouldn't an artist want to put his best foot forward? because artists are conceited idiots who think they can do no wrong. other musicians promised me songs and never delivered `em. most people i approached ignored my repeat requests for unreleased tunage. despite these numerous flakey musician caused setbacks, i somehow gathered up enough decent material to justify moving forward with the project. the vast majority of the material i had on hand sounded like shit and needed to be remixed or, in some cases, mixed. thankfully, i had a friend who offered to help correct the various sonic imperfections of the master tapes. the poor bastard not only had to transfer much of the material from analog sources to digital media, but he also had to edit out tons of tape hiss and distracting ambient noise. the process of fixing the recordings lasted a few months but the results were deemed successful--the tracks were still unlistenable crap by most standards, but at least there wasn't as much tape hiss on `em! as the cd was being mastered by my kind-hearted pal, i focused on designing the art for the disc's packaging. my initial thought was to hire a professional to do the job for me, but an ex-girlfriend swore she knew how to use adobe illustrator and insisted she could do the artwork herself for free. like a fool, i accepted her services and here's where my troubles began. see, when i first accepted her kind offer of help, i didn't take into consideration the fact that she was a lazy piece of shit. her "help" ended up costing me tons of cash and numerous nights of restful sleep. this braintrust managed to lose all of the artwork twice and had to recreate the packaging from scratch both times that the data was mistakenly erased from her computer. why the fuck she didn't think to save her work to disc after she lost all of it the first time is beyond me. her careless bungling of the graphic design duties caused me to launch into at least two separate uncontrollable screaming fits and i ended up buying my own copy of adobe illustrator so i could finish the art myself after she bailed out on me. when it was all said and done, my pockets were a few hundred dollars lighter i may as well have hired someone to do the art for me if i was gonna drop a few hundred dollars anyway! ; and the ex told people she had designed the artwork for the cd by herself even though i had dictated the entire layout to her and eventually completed the project without her. ain't that just like a woman! to add to my distress, i accidentally stumbled upon a website for another "also ran records, " this one specializing in house music, while bitterly googling the name of my first and only true love one day. d'oh! i hoped the dash in my "also-ran" was enough to set the two labels apart and pressed on. with the mastered cd and its completed artwork in my hands, it was time to find a reputable company to press the cds. a band i was friends with suggested a cd manufacturer and i settled on their services. i'm glad i did--not only did the company do a great job on the cds, but they were also a pleasure to deal with, though not nearly enough of a pleasure to deal with that i'm willing to give `em a free plug here. sorry, guys. the manufacture of one thousand cds with clear jewel cases and a nifty topside upcspine cost me sixteen hundred dollars and roulette.
